We Did It! Columbus City Schools Passed the Safe Green Schools Policy

In a unanimous vote, the Columbus City Schools (CCS) Board of Education has officially passed the Safe Green Schools policy. This is a significant milestone for students, families, and the future of public education in Columbus.

This victory did not happen overnight. It is the result of sustained organizing by parents, educators, students, caregivers, and community members who came together to advocate for green schools as a smart, forward-looking budget solution and an investment in our children’s future.

At a time when school districts across Ohio are navigating severe state and federal budget cuts, rising utility costs, and aging infrastructure, CCS is responding with cost-saving infrastructure improvements such as solar power, geothermal HVAC systems, energy-efficient windows and doors, and LED lighting.

From Commitment to Accountability

Earlier this year the CCS Board passed a resolution committing the district to becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. The passage of the Safe Green Schools Policy transforms that commitment into action.

The policy requires the district to explore cost-saving, energy-efficient solutions every time a building is repaired or newly constructed. That includes transitioning to renewable energy and clean infrastructure.

This ensures accountability and creates a framework for real, measurable progress – not just promises.

Organizing Families Made This Possible

This moment belongs to the community. You showed up, testified, signed petitions, and made it clear that CCS needed to act, and the Board listened.

At the meeting, CCS parent and Safe Green Schools Campaign leader Cat Lynch presented a scroll bearing the names of Safe Green Schools petition signers, visibly representing the hundreds of families and supporters who helped push this policy forward. Even those who could not attend in person were present in that room.

We also applaud Superintendent Angela Chapman, Sarah Ingles, Jennifer Adair, and the district’s facilities department for their forward-looking vision, their determination to stretch every dollar for students, and their leadership in preparing our schools for a changing climate.

As Ohio's largest school district, Columbus is demonstrating what is possible and setting a precedent for other districts to follow.

What Comes Next

Passing the policy was the goal. Implementation is the next chapter.

Climate change is already affecting our schools through more frequent heat waves, flooding, and extreme weather. Safe Green Schools ensures that Columbus is not reacting too late, but planning ahead with our kids’ futures at the center.

This win shows what happens when families organize together with clarity, persistence, and hope. And it reminds us that even in difficult budget times, bold and responsible solutions are possible.

We are excited for more to come in the new year as we continue building momentum for green, healthy, and resilient schools.
